Safe Roof Walkway Systems
At Encap Roofing, we supply and install professional roof walkway systems for commercial and industrial buildings across the UK. Our non-slip roof walkways give operatives a safe, designated route across any rooftop. Furthermore, they protect the roof surface from damage caused by uncontrolled foot traffic. We install GRP roof walkways, metal roof walkways, and bespoke roof access walkway systems. In short, we build solutions that keep people safe and buildings legally compliant.
Designed, Installed & Compliant
Safety drives every decision we make. Consequently, every roof walkway system we install meets current UK health and safety legislation from day one.
Our team are fully trained working-at-height specialists. They have hands-on experience across all commercial and industrial roof types. These include flat single-ply membranes, profiled metal sheeting, and standing seam roofs.
Before we start, we carry out a thorough site survey. We assess the roof structure and identify the access routes you need. We also determine the correct fixing method for your specific roof construction. As a result, your walkway system is never a generic off-the-shelf fit — we engineer it for your building.
We install GRP roof walkways as our most popular solution. They are lightweight, inherently non-slip, and corrosion-resistant. Moreover, they need virtually no ongoing maintenance. For heavier-duty environments and pitched roofs, we specify galvanised steel or aluminium metal roof walkways instead. These provide the load-bearing capacity that industrial sites demand.
Where a standard system will not work, we design bespoke roof access walkway solutions to fit. This covers complex plant layouts, unusual roof geometry, and multi-level rooftops.
After installation, we provide full compliance documentation for your records. We also offer ongoing safety system re-certification to keep your walkways signed off year on year. In addition, we integrate roof walkway systems with guardrail edge protection and horizontal safety line systems where a complete rooftop solution is required.
Compliance & Commitment
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 place a clear legal duty on employers and building owners. They must eliminate or control the risks linked to rooftop access. The HSE states that where a roof is accessed regularly, a permanent compliant solution must be in place.
Roof walkway systems are one of the primary ways to meet that obligation. Therefore, relying on ad hoc access routes for regular maintenance is not acceptable.
At Encap Roofing, we handle every aspect of compliance for you. We survey, specify, install, and certify. We work closely with clients throughout the process. As a result, you know exactly what has been installed and why. Above all, you can be confident your site is safe, compliant, and fully documented.
Our commitment does not end at installation. We are here for the lifetime of your safe access system.
What are roof walkways used for?
Roof walkways give operatives a safe, designated route across any commercial rooftop. Maintenance engineers, facilities managers, and contractors all use them regularly.
Without a walkway system, routine tasks carry serious risk. Inspecting HVAC units, cleaning gutters, and checking solar panels all expose workers to slip and fall hazards — particularly in wet or icy conditions.
In addition, roof walkways protect the roof itself. Uncontrolled foot traffic causes punctures and early deterioration on flat membranes and felt roofs. A walkway channels all traffic along a reinforced path and, as a result, extends the life of your roof covering significantly.
Roof access walkways are typically used to provide safe routes to plant and equipment, protect vulnerable roof membranes, meet HSE working at height obligations, and establish clearly defined access routes across complex rooftops.
Are roof walkways required by law in the UK?
Yes. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 place a clear legal duty on employers and building owners. They must eliminate or control the risks linked to working at height.
The HSE is direct on this point. Where a rooftop is accessed regularly — for any reason — a permanent, compliant safe access solution must exist. Furthermore, temporary or ad hoc arrangements do not satisfy this requirement for regular maintenance routes.
Roof walkway systems are one of the primary ways to meet this obligation. Without them, building owners and employers face significant legal and financial liability if an incident occurs.
Encap Roofing offers a free site assessment. We will advise on the most appropriate solution for your specific compliance requirements. As a result, you can be confident your building meets its full legal obligations.
What materials are best for roof walkways?
The right material depends on three things: your roof type, the volume of traffic the walkway will carry, and your budget.
GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) is our most commonly specified option. It is lightweight, inherently non-slip, and corrosion-resistant. It also needs very little maintenance. Consequently, GRP suits the vast majority of commercial flat and low-pitched roofs.
Metal roof walkways — in galvanised steel or aluminium — work better for heavier-duty industrial sites and pitched roofs. They offer greater structural load bearing where high traffic volumes demand it.
For lower-traffic routes, non-slip walkway pads provide a straightforward and cost-effective alternative. However, we always recommend the most appropriate system for your specific roof and access requirements. We will never over-specify or under-specify the solution.
